Eight terms you should know about carpet

Carpet installation can add a lot of warmth, style, and richness to your home. It’s also functional, providing cushioning and protecting from hard falls and reducing noise.

Even though they might look similar, not all carpets are alike. Some are better for some areas than others. Some may work for one lifestyle, but not another, so it’s always important for you to examine these areas before you start shopping.

Six Floors Down has been serving the area for 14 years. We handle both residential and commercial, the latter being restaurants, medical facilities, and retail locations. With a fully stocked flooring inventory, we also provide professional installation and more.

Our showroom is in Westerville, OH and we service Columbus, Worthington, New Albany, and Lewis Center.

If you prefer, we can always come to your home or business with flooring samples.

Basic terms you should know

  • Density. This means how closely the carpet fibers are put together and this, not thickness, determines quality. A carpet can be too thick for some installations, such as stairs.Bend back a sample card; if you see a lot of white space, it’s a lower quality carpet.
  • Frieze. This is a style with long fibers that twist. It is considered a high pile and it's soft and cushy. It's good for living rooms or the bedroom, but never stairs.
  • Saxony. Another style that looks a little like velvet.
  • Shag or “sheepdog carpet.” Still another style, but what you may not realize is that technology has greatly expanded the color palette with purple, red, blue, etc, and even rugs with mixed shades. They’re quirky and fun.●Berber. A loop pattern often associated with the Olefin fiber.
  • High and low pile. High piles are plush and cushiony, like the Frieze and Shag. Low pile rugs tend to be a little stronger, and well-known examples are the Berber or the cut-and-loop patterns.
  • Olefin. This is a synthetic, economical fiber that has excellent stain-resistance, but isn’t necessarily durable EXCEPT when it’s in a loop, such as the Berber. The reason is the loop patterns tend to use the part of the fiber that just so happens to be the strongest for Olefin. Other basic fibers are nylon; polyester; and the all-natural Wool.
  • Padding. Don't skimp on this. Good padding is like the asphalt on a driveway; you can't see it, but it is the foundation. The rug protects the floor and the padding protects the carpet, keeping it free of wrinkles and rolls. Carpet should not be a DIY installation, as it requires special tools and skills. Hire an expert to do the job.
